Resource Use, Waste & Chemicals

Our Work

IEEP has been increasing its work on resource use, in parallel to the stronger focus in EU policies on minimising natural resource use and maximising resource efficiency. The Institute is a partner in a major framework contract for DG Environment on the Sustainable Management of Resources, which has so far given rise to projects on natural resources (reviewing the Natural Resources Thematic Strategy, analysing key contributions to resource efficiency, large scale planning and design of resource use), on waste (reviewing the Waste Thematic Strategy, investigating construction and demolition, plastic and food waste, and implementing EU waste legislation for green growth) and on other aspects related to resource use.

Review of the EU Natural Resources Thematic Strategy
IEEP is a partner in this study which aims to assess progress towards meeting the objectives of the Thematic Strategy on the Sustainable Use of Natural Resources, examining which actions have contributed to this and to what extent. The study is also estimating future trends and may propose new measures, or the strengthening of existing measures. The latest information on the project can be found at: www.eu-smr.eu/tssrm/

A contribution to an OECD report on eco-innovation. This involved an analysis of the policies and practice of certain countries (Australia, Canada, Japan, Korea, Mexico, New Zealand, Turkey and the USA) to encourage innovation and also for a general analysis of instruments and policies for eco-innovation.

  • EU Natural Resources policy: Signposts on the roadmap to sustainability

The EU is committed to building improved resource efficiency into its economic strategy, starting with a “roadmap” this year. A new paper from the Institute sets out the challenges, reviews the mixed results of previous EU policy in this area and suggests a number of ways forward. Both a broad vision and an array of practical policy initiatives are required.
